Julie Welch

SpecialityChief People Officer, Carey Group Plc

Julie joined the Carey Group at Executive Board level in the newly created role of Chief People Officer in February 2019 where she is responsible for the creation and delivery of the people strategy for the Group.

The Carey Group is a leading privately owned family governed civil engineering and construction business, operating across the UK and Ireland that was founded in 1969 with revenues of c£600m per annum. Some of the iconic projects Careys are currently working is the redevelopment of Oxford Street.

Prior to Careys, Julie worked for Bunzl Plc, a FTSE100 support services company where she was Director of Group HR. Bunzl has worldwide revenues of over £9 billion with more than 19,000 colleagues globally in 31 countries. She also worked for Wincanton for five-and-a-half years as Group HR Director, at Royal Mail as HR Director for Operations and Modernisation and was People Director UK and Ireland for the brewer AnheuserBusch InBev. Julie developed her HR career at Sainsbury’s where she worked for 13 years holding various HR roles.

Julie attained a degree in English and Social Anthropology from Keele University and a master’s in human resource management from Middlesex University Business School and is also an Alumni of INSEAD. She is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Julie has been listed in the HR Most Influential Awards since 2016 in both logistics and construction and was a judge at the CIPD Awards in 2019.

Having worked in public listed companies, public sector and family-owned businesses, both domestic UK and global, her perspectives are taken from these varies experiences. Her particular areas of interest in HR are the evolution of the people function and high-performance HR teams and colleague engagement.
